词组 | homograph, homophone, homonym |
释义 | homograph, homophone, homonym Our correspondence shows that people are occasionally muddled by these words. Homograph is used for words that are spelled alike but are different in meaning or derivation or pronunciation: the bow of a ship, a bow and arrow. Homophone is used for words that sound alike but are different in meaning or derivation or spelling: to, too, two; magnate, magnet; rack, wrack. Homonym is used for homographs or homophones; sometimes it is used more specifically to designate words that are both homographs and homophones, like the verb quail and the noun quail. John Algeo, in The English Language Today (1985), reports that confusion of homophones is a major subject of writers on usage in the popular press. Homophones certainly present spelling problems, and you will find plenty of them in this book. Homophones are also a primary source of puns. |
