词组 supersede, supercede
释义 supersede, supercede
Supercede has a long history of occasional use as a spelling variant of supersede; or, to put it another way, people have been misspelling supersede for centuries. It all depends on your point of view. Both spellings can be etymologically justified: the original Latin verb was spelled supersedere, but the derivative verb in Old French, by way of which the word came into English, was first spelled superceder and only later supersedes according to the OED. The earliest record of this word in English (1491) shows it spelled with a c. Most other early citations, however, are for the 5 spelling, and there is no doubt that the 5 spelling has always been the dominant one in English. Supersede continues to be widely regarded—not just by usage commentators—as the only correct spelling of this word. Supercede, on the other hand, continues to turn up regularly in standard, edited prose:
... is in some ways superceding other forms — Annette Michelson, Evergreen, August 1967
... existing programs ... were superceded by programs that channeled funds directly into inner-city neighborhoods —Frances Fox Piven, Columbia Forum, Summer 1970
They were superceded early in the twentieth century by publicly owned corporations —Webster Schott, Saturday Rev., 29 Apr. 1978
... does not intend his book to supercede professional treatment —Genevieve Stuttafbrd, Publishers Weekly, 2 Apr. 1979
... had been superceded by more modern values — Eric Foner, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 23 May 1982
