词组 thankfully
释义 thankfully
The adverb thankfully, used as a sentence modifier ("Thankfully, it didn't rain"), is at once less popular and less unpopular than the sentence-modifying hopefully ("Hopefully, it won't rain"). Its use is sufficiently common to have drawn some critical attention, but not so common as to have attracted the kind of sustained and vitriolic abuse that has been heaped on hopefully for the past quarter century.
Our earliest evidence for the sentence-modifying thankfully is from 1963, which is about the time when hopefully was beginning to become an infamous word among language watchers.
Thankfully, the publishers have reproduced many of the canvases in detail—Saturday Rev., 16 Feb. 1963
Such usage was noted and criticized in 1966 by Wilson Follett, who offered it as an example of how "the rotten apple will corrupt the barrel"—that is, how the use of hopefully will encourage similar use of other adverbs. Later critics (such as Copperud 1970, Harper 1975, and Phythian 1979) have taken a similar view but have generally kept their criticism of thankfully brief, more or less as an adjunct to their extensive criticism of hopefully. It is safe to assume, in fact, that anyone who dislikes hopefully will also dislike thankfully, but because of its somewhat less obtrusive presence and its status as a side issue to the main controversy, thankfully is less likely to be criticized than hopefully. As far as actual usage is concerned, our evidence shows that the sentence-modifying thankfully occurs fairly widely in both British and American general writing in contexts that are entirely reputable:
Garton, thankfully, is perfectly English —The Observer, 6 Jan. 1974
... though thankfully this was not apparent in the streets —Richard Gordon, Punch, 1 May 1974
Thankfully, the "practice" section is much more useful —Florence Carlson & David Shroyer, English Jour., March 1977
Greek art, thankfully, is not obsessed by either death-demons or ghosts —John Boardman, Times Literary Supp., 25 Jan. 1980
... unnecessary moralizing, which Mr. Auletta has thankfully outgrown —Bob Kuttner, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 10 Aug. 1980
... the odor had thankfully diminished —Michael Baughman, Sports Illustrated, 22 Nov. 1982
Which means, thankfully, that the hype is about to end —Jeff Jarvis, People, 30 July 1984
Thankfully, those opinions are advanced with graceful prose —Ken Auletta, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 28 July 1985
