词组 | then |
释义 | then 1. Some controversial issues never quite get off the ground. The use of then as an adjective was criticized by Baker in the 18th century, and Follett has expressed some reservations about it in the 20th, but the consensus among the few other commentators who have taken note of it is that the adjective then is a useful and concise word. It is an old one, certainly, first recorded in 1584. Among the authors who have used it are Johnson, Boswell, Coleridge, Poe, Tennyson, and Henry James. It continues in widespread use today: • ... went to Wales to tutor the daughter of the then Chancellor of the Exchequer —Elizabeth Janeway, Cosmopolitan, February 1972 • ... the university's then president —Sports Illustrated, 27 Sept. 1982 There is some tendency in recent years to attach then to the word it modifies by means of a hyphen: • ... aimed at Reagan, the then-Governor of California —Jess Nierenberg, Maledicta 1983 But it is still usually treated as a separate adjective: • ... to the then prominent engraver, John Farley — Barry Moser, Publishers Weekly, 6 July 1984 • ... the then editor of the Merriam dictionaries — Harper 1985 See also now. 2.See than 3. |
