词组 | boost |
释义 | boost For some mysterious reason American commentators tend to be uncomfortable in the presence of full-blown Americanisms. Boost, both noun and verb, is such a one. Vizetelly 1906 thought it a vulgarism and Copperud 1964 and Bernstein 1965 dislike the noun in the sense of "increase, raise, rise." Copperud 1970 admits that dictionaries find these senses standard. The noun is popular in business reporting: • A boost in the banking industry's prime rate — Edward P. Foldessy, Wall Street Jour., 18 Jan. 1982 • ... sold fairly well initially, but then two boosts made sales skyrocket —Miriam Berkley, Publishers Weekly, 28 Sept. 1984 It also has technical uses: • In order to use a gravity boost at Saturn to propel Voyager 2 on toward ... Uranus —Science, 29 Jan. 1982 • When the boost is in, however, the Toyota twin-cam is anything but stock —Jean Lindamood, Car and Driver, August 1983 No one since Vizetelly has grumbled at the verb. The OED Supplement notes that it is now used even in British English: • The injections contain this hormone to boost your natural supplies —Dr. Jane Vosper, Woman's Realm, 26 Oct. 1974 |
