vacuity, vacuousness Some commentators have made a distinction between vacuity and vacuousness. Evans 1957 prefers vacuousness for descriptions of facial expressions. Fowler 1926 regards vacuousness as an acceptable alternative in such cases, but notes that in other contexts vacuity is "the usual word." Our evidence shows that vacuity is by far the commoner term, regardless of meaning. Vacuousness is rarely used but occurs in the same kinds of contexts as vacuity. |
