词组 inferior, superior
释义 inferior, superior
Inferior and superior, as a result of the somewhat tricky role they have as implicit comparatives in English, are favorite subjects of usage commentators. The most commonly raised issue is that idiomatically they should be followed by to rather than than (a telling point that shows they are not true comparatives, according to Quirk et al. 1985). All the commentators are agreed on this. And, unlike Partridge 1942 and Shaw 1975, we find that writers almost always do follow inferior and superior with to:
... regarded as inferior to the earlier work —Current Biography, June 1966
No longer do workers and peasants feel inferior to the university-trained —Rhea Menzel Whitehead, Saturday Rev., 4 Mar. 1972
... nor is the tuition greatly superior to that of the tax-supported schools —B. K. Sandwell, The Canadian Peoples, 1941
On the whole, they were infinitely superior to the situation —Andrew Sarris, Village Voice, 28 Feb. 1968
The only evidence we have for than is second-hand: Fowler 1926 gives two citations without attribution for superior than; Partridge 1942 harks back to an 1898 issue of the Fortnightly Review for an example of inferior than; and Bernstein 1977 cites a radio commercial for superior than. See also implicit comparative.
