词组 in addition to
释义 in addition to
A couple of commentators disparage in addition to as a wordy alternative to besides. It is, rather, a longer alternative to besides that may be chosen for variety or for sentence rhythm. It can also be paired with another longer phrase where besides would work poorly:
... research and publication and community service should be carried on in addition to, rather than as a substitute for, class and seminar instruction —Bruce Dearing, CEA Forum, April 1971
All this in addition to, and even in defiance of, whatever real or pretended sex education ... may be offered —G. Legman, Rationale of the Dirty Joke, 1st series, 1968
When the phrase is most nearly literal, besides will not substitute well for it:
... a core of educational experiences, in addition to the basic core for the technician aide, could be directed toward preparing students —Arden L. Pratt, Junior College Jour., December 1970-January 1971
... was appointed the Stratford company's general manager, in addition to his other duties —Current Biography, September 1965
In addition to is most easily interchangeable with besides when it begins a sentence, and if our evidence is typical, this is its most common position:
In addition to everything else, Hemming proved to have an odd sense of mischief —Jeremy Bernstein, New Yorker, 30 Oct. 1971
In addition to these regular reminders Dr. Adams recently put out... an excellent guidebook —Times Literary Supp., 5 Feb. 1970
We are also warned that in addition to, unlike and, does not add one subject of a sentence to another and thus does not affect the number of the verb. We cannot show you an example of this construction, because we have none in our files. We suspect it to be rare in edited prose.
