词组 visit, visit with
释义 visit, visit with
A few British critics unfamiliar with American idiom have misunderstood the phrase visit with as a needlessly wordy alternative to visit. Most Americans, however, will instantly recognize that to "visit with someone" is not the same as to "visit someone." "Visit with" is actually a typical American use of visit as an intransitive verb meaning "chat" or "converse." This sense of visit seems to have originated in the Southern U.S. during the late 19th century. It is often, but not always, followed by with:
We visited with him for two hours —The Autobiography of William Allen White, 1946
Chances are you've visited with your neighbors often about what should be done in Washington today — Successful Farming, December 1953
I know a village full of bees,
And gardens lit by canna torches, Where all the streets are named for trees
And people visit on their porches—Phyllis McGinley, New Yorker, 4 Aug. 1951
As the last quotation shows especially well, this intransitive visit often carries connotations of friendship and neighborliness. To say that you "visited with" someone usually implies not only that you conversed, but that you went a bit out of your way for the sake of some friendly talk.
