词组 wax
释义 wax
The verb wax, in the sense "to grow or become," is uncommon enough in present-day English for some writers to feel a little uncertain about how to use it. Copperud 1980 cites a passage in which "TV commentators" are said to have "waxed authoritatively." We have evidence in our files of a similar error:
... he does not wax enthusiastically over combining rock and symphonic music —Philharmonic Hall, December 1970
Standard English requires "wax enthusiastic," just as it requires "become enthusiastic." The reason for the confusion is presumably that such phrases as wax authoritative and wax enthusiastic normally relate to speech or writing, so that wax enthusiastic is almost equivalent in meaning to speak enthusiastically. Writers who follow wax with an adverb apparently understand it as meaning "to speak or hold forth," but that meaning is not established. For the phrase wax wroth, see wrath, wrathful, wroth.
