词组 | well-nigh |
释义 | well-nigh The adjective well-nigh has been variously called "antique" (Fowler 1926, 1965), "a cliché" (Partridge 1942), "rustic or comic" (Evans 1957), and "medieval" (Flesch 1964). None of these characterizations is given much support by the evidence in our files. Well-nigh is a fairly common word, which in general appears to be nothing but a perfectly good synonym for nearly: • The attractions ... are well-nigh irresistible —Norton E. Long & Nena Groskind, Change, May 1972 • ... the pressures for conformity ... have been well-nigh overwhelming —Martin Kilson, N.Y. Times Mag., 2 Sept. 1973 • The resultant recording is well-nigh perfect — Thomas Heinitz, Saturday Rev., 24 Apr. 1954 • ... the evidence is well-nigh unimpeachable —Morris Fishbein, The Popular Medical Encyclopedia, 1946 • ... was actually a well-nigh total edulcoration of the novel —John Simon, Atlantic, April 1982 |
