词组 | anyways |
释义 | anyways None of the senses of anyways are standard contemporary English, but you should not conclude that they are substandard, as Copperud 1970 does. When anyways means "anywise," it is archaic: • And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes —Leviticus 20:4 (AV), 1611 • ... who have no places, nor are anyways dependent on the King —Thomas Gray, letter, 24 May 1742 The other uses—"to any degree at all" and "in any case, anyway, anyhow"—are dialectal. The Dictionary of American Regional English marks both senses now chiefly South and South Midland, though some of the earliest evidence for "to any degree at all" is from New England. A few examples: • Then the trial began, and, as you might expect, it didn't look anyways good for the defense —Stephen Vincent Benêt, "The Devil and Daniel Webster," 1937, in American Harvest, ed. Allen Tate & John Peale Bishop, 1942 • "Anyways," said Jackie, "better late than never "—John Dos Passos, Number One, 1943 • ... I think I will go to New York anyways sometime next summer —Flannery O'Connor, letter, 25 Jan. 1953 The "anyway" use exists in some British dialects, too. The OED notes Dickens, and our files contain this: • Anyways, it could not be found there —Joseph Conrad, Youth, 1902 |
