词组 | yet |
释义 | yet The use of yet with a verb in the plain past tense with did ("Did he leave yet?" rather than "Has he left yet?") has sometimes been criticized. Shaw 1975, 1987 calls such use nonstandard; Longman 1984 says that it does not occur "except in informal American English." Such use is common and unobjectionable in ordinary speech. Its occurrence in writing, according to our evidence, is rare. Here is one example: • But he didn't see it even yet —Lincoln Steffens, "A Prince and a Cowboy," in Chains of Light (8th-grade textbook), ed. Theodore Clymer, 1982 Such use is not limited to American English. Here we find it in the dialogue of an Irish play: • Did Mr. Mineog come yet, John? —Lady Gregory, Coats, in New Comedies, 1913 |
