词组 à la
释义 à la
This imported preposition has its grave accent over the a printed often enough, even in American use, that the unaccented form is considered a secondary variant. And although it has been used in English contexts since the end of the 16th century, some writers still feel that it is French and italicize it. It is widely used in English outside the field of cookery as well as within. Longman 1984 and Fowler 1965 note that its form is fixed in English (as it is in French for reasons of the underlying grammar). In English the preposition is often followed by a proper name, and even when the name is clearly masculine the feminine article la is retained. Here is a selection of fairly recent examples of its use:
... going on to other things, whether à la David Frost or à la Jonathan Miller —Times Literary Supp., 26 Nov. 1971
... chomping on a large cigar à la Castro —Alan Ridmg, Saturday Rev., 24 July 1976
... eating up the keyboard à la Horowitz —Harold C. Schonberg, Harper's, April 1971
... the camera does a semicircular track à la Vertigo —John Simon, New York, 6 Dec. 1976
... a division-sized posse prepared to go in à la Entebbe —Pine Bluff (Ark.) Commercial, quoted in N.Y. Times, 13 Nov. 1979
I was filling in with my drumsticks all kinds of complicated rhythmical riffs a la Castanet parts — Michael Tilson Thomas, quoted in Rolling Stone, 14 Sept. 1972
... will now try to ignore the flap and get the renominations over with, a la politics-as-usual —Wall Street Jour., 3 June 1980
