词组 noplace
释义 noplace
Noplace, meaning "nowhere," is condemned along with anyplace, everyplace, and someplace by a number of commentators on the grounds that place, a noun, should not be used as an adverb to mean "where." The objection does not hold water, as Bernstein 1971 points out at anyplace, because place is often used in combinations where it has adverbial force.
The evidence in our files and in the OED Supplement shows that noplace is found in American English rather than British English and that it is used in print less frequently than anyplace or someplace and about as frequently as everyplace. It is apparently more a spoken than a written form. In print it looks like this:
The car as a living room will have arrived, and getting from one place to another will be just as exciting as getting absolutely noplace —New Yorker, 29 Jan. 1955
The adverbial noplace, which is sometimes spelled as two words, should be distinguished from the simple combination of no and place:
Daring ... had no place in the old role —Elizabeth Janeway, Ms., April 1973
      See also anyplace; everyplace; someplace.
