词组 | vehicle |
释义 | vehicle For a long time, dictionaries recommended sounding the \\\\h\\\\ in vehicle, and similarly in vehement. But we have evidence back to the early 17th century that the \\\\h\\\\ was often dropped in these words. Annihilate \\\\ə-'ni-ə-,lāt\\\\ also shows this dropping of \\\\h\\\\ when it would fall after the stress and between vowels. The resulting vocalic hiatus (two vowels occurring next to each other without a consonant in between) is often simplified to a single vowel: again, we have early evidence for two-syllable pronunciations \\\\vē-'hik-əl\\\\ and \\\\vē-mənt\\\\. A similar simplification may be observed in the very common current American pronunciations of diamond and diaper: \\\\dī-mənd\\\\ and \\\\dī-pər\\\\. Today, the usual (and the recommended) pronunciation of vehicle is without \\\\h\\\\: \\\\vē-ə-kəl\\\\ or \\\\'vē-,ik-əl\\\\. In the United States, a pronunciation with \\\\h\\\\ is also widespread: \\\\'vē-hik-əl\\\\ or \\\\'vē-,hik-əl\\\\. It is considered especially characteristic of the South, though it is not universal there and may also be heard throughout the rest of the country. For reasons that are not entirely clear, \\\\'vē-,hik-əl\\\\ suffers from an unjust stigma as a yokel's pronunciation. Various suggestions have been put forward for the tenacity of the \\\\h\\\\: influence of the spelling, of the adjective vehicular where \\\\h\\\\ is normally sounded, and of the special cadences of Armed Services speech. We are also warned, in usage sources, against giving primary stress to the second syllable of vehicle. This pronunciation is far less common than any of the variants with initial stress. Our pronunciation files include only three citations for \\\\(')vē-'hik-əl\\\\, although one of them is from a university president. See also h. |
