词组 object
释义 object
When object is used with a preposition, it usually takes to. What follows to may be a noun, pronoun, gerund, or infinitive:
She had the desire to do something which she objected to doing —Arnold Bennett, The Old Wives' Tale, 1908
Mademoiselle Lucy corrected her uncle's French, but objected to do more —George Meredith, The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, 1859
"... But our silly husbands have a way of objecting to that sort of thing." —Roald Dahl, Someone Like You, 1953
... but what good does objecting to Uncle Daniel do? You just get fired —Eudora Welty, The Ponder Heart, 1954
... he at least strenuously objected to many of the German demands —William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1960
Fowler 1926 says "the infinitive is deprecated & the gerund recommended...." In actual usage, the infinitive is not frequent, but the quotation from Meredith above is an instance of it. The gerund, as in the quotation from Bennett, is found more often. Object to followed by a noun phrase is the most common construction.
Bernstein 1965 notes that object can also be followed by against. Examples in the OED show that object against was at one time in common use; in the 20th century, however, it is rare, and we have little evidence for it:
It would be objected against these men that they would still be themselves and wreck illusion —New Republic, 15 Feb. 1939
