词组 ordinance, ordnance
释义 ordinance, ordnance
A number of usage commentators trouble themselves to distinguish between these words, along the following lines. Ordinance has several meanings, the most common of which is "a law set forth by a governmental authority":
... the nation's first planning and zoning ordinance to set up controls for a historic district —David Butwin, Saturday Rev., 15 Apr. 1972
Ordnance is a military word which is etymologically related to ordinance (both are derived from the Middle French ordenance, "act of arranging") but is otherwise distinct from it. Ordnance can mean "artillery," "a service of the army in charge of combat supplies," or "military supplies for combat":
... the danger from unexploded ordnance —Paul R. Ehrlich & John P. Holdren, Saturday Rev., 4 Dec. 1971
Confusion of these similar words is rare, but not unheard of. The most likely mistake to be made is the substitution of the more common word, ordinance, for the less common ordnance:
Early in 1944, Joe was drafted into the Army and trained in ordinance —Guitar Player, August 1981
