词组 paparazzo, paparazzi
释义 paparazzo, paparazzi
Paparazzo, usually seen in the form of its plural paparazzi, is a quite recent import from Italian. It usually refers to one of those free-lance photographers who are noted for their aggressive pursuit of celebrities:
... only a remote chance that gossip columnists or paparazzi will crash the parties in the hotel's private suites—Newsweek, 10 Jan. 1966
... used paparazzi tactics in order to snap candid pictures of reclusive celebrities —Patricia Bosworth, Esquire, May 1973
It was like paparazzi photographing each other instead of the celebrities —Ronald Steel, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 5 Aug. 1984
It should come as no surprise that a recent import from Italian suffers a certain amount of misspelling and has its plural taken as a singular. One wire service managed to do both at once:
... a self-styled "papparrazi" who claimed he had taken and sold thousands of photos —Transcript-Telegram (Holyoke, Mass), (UPI), 6 July 1972
Remember that the ending in i is the plural and that only the z is doubled. If you spell the word with two or three sets of double letters, you're in trouble. See Latin plurals for other plurals used as singulars.
