词组 | paparazzo, paparazzi |
释义 | paparazzo, paparazzi Paparazzo, usually seen in the form of its plural paparazzi, is a quite recent import from Italian. It usually refers to one of those free-lance photographers who are noted for their aggressive pursuit of celebrities: • ... only a remote chance that gossip columnists or paparazzi will crash the parties in the hotel's private suites—Newsweek, 10 Jan. 1966 • ... used paparazzi tactics in order to snap candid pictures of reclusive celebrities —Patricia Bosworth, Esquire, May 1973 • It was like paparazzi photographing each other instead of the celebrities —Ronald Steel, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 5 Aug. 1984 It should come as no surprise that a recent import from Italian suffers a certain amount of misspelling and has its plural taken as a singular. One wire service managed to do both at once: • ... a self-styled "papparrazi" who claimed he had taken and sold thousands of photos —Transcript-Telegram (Holyoke, Mass), (UPI), 6 July 1972 Remember that the ending in i is the plural and that only the z is doubled. If you spell the word with two or three sets of double letters, you're in trouble. See Latin plurals for other plurals used as singulars. |
