词组 | peradventure |
释义 | peradventure Chances are you have never used this word and never will use it, but in case you feel the urge, be advised that Fowler 1926 and Krapp 1927 consider peradventure archaic and Flesch 1964 considers it pompous. As an adverb meaning "perhaps" it is certainly archaic (the most recent evidence of the adverb that we know of is from 1874), but as a noun it persists in occasional—very occasional—use, most often following the preposition beyond: • Beyond peradventure, certainly, Chopin was a neurotic —James Lyons, Boston Symphony Orchestra Program, December 1970 • I know a surgeon who, having left the room, is certain, beyond peradventure of doubt, that his disembodied radiance lingers on —Richard Selzer, "Letter to a Young Surgeon," 1982, in The Contemporary Essay, ed. Donald Hall, 1984 As these citations show, the noun peradventure is understood somewhat differently by different writers. It can mean either "doubt" ("beyond peradventure") or "chance" ("beyond peradventure of doubt"). Whichever way the writer understands it, however, there is an excellent chance that some readers will not understand it at all. If you feel the need to use this word, you had better use it with caution. |
