词组 confusion
释义 confusion
Almost all handbooks have warnings about various pairs of words that are "often confused." Many of these pairs are homophones, such as hail and hale, that are substituted for each other because they sound alike. Many others are pairs that don't necessarily sound alike but are close in spelling, such as confidant and confident, so that one may be written inadvertently in place of the other. Many of these pairs receive separate treatment in this book.
In addition we sometimes encounter substitutions of one word for another that shares perhaps some elements of pronunciation with it. These are not easily explained; they are not commonplace occurrences—if they were they would perhaps be worth individual treatment. Some of them no doubt result from garbled or inattentive transcription of tape recordings. They are not strictly malapropisms, which are usually the result of reaching for an unfamiliar word in speech (or sometimes in writing). The names of the perpetrators of these examples, when known, have been suppressed. See also malapropism.
