词组 | design, intend |
释义 | design, intend Einstein 1985 says that "common usage now freely substitutes design for intend." He doesn't like it, however. Copperud 1970, 1980, opines that design is overused in journalism. Here are what seem to be some typical journalistic uses: • President Reagan, in an appearance at Jefferson Junior High School in Washington, D.C., that was designed to show his interest in educational issues — Publishers Weekly, 14 Sept. 1984 • ... a move designed to bolster confidence in the pound sterling —Current Biography, February 1968 • ... a list of questions designed to find out just what our readers thought —McCall's, March 1971 The writer in each of these examples might have used intend, but it is hard to see what improvement would come from a substitution. The use of design in senses close to intend dates back at least to the 17th century. Here is an example from a literary source: • The conference was neither so short nor so conclusive as the lady had designed —Jane Austen, Mansfield Park, 1814 This is not to suggest that design and intend are freely interchangeable. Einstein's advice to stop and think when you go to write design is sound; sometimes intend will indeed be the better choice. And sometimes not. In this last example, the use of intend would have muddled the intended meaning: • Then she went out in search of a new lifestyle, one better designed to elude threats to her well-being — Don Gold, Cosmopolitan, June 1976 |
