词组 phone
释义 phone
Prentice Hall 1978 and Bell & Cohn 1981 tell us in all seriousness that phone is colloquial and not to be used in formal writing. The ban on phone was announced by Emily Post back in 1927. It was one of a number of clipped forms—auto and photo were two others—that were viewed askance by linguistic etiquette books (such as MacCracken & Sandison 1917) in the early years of this century. In the same list with phone, Emily Post included mints. No usage writer has commented on that one.
If Emily Post's ideal Mrs. Worldly would never have said phone in 1927, she probably would say it today. You need not give its use in writing at any level a second thought, though the undipped telephone is equally available if you prefer it.
