1) 它同 possible 一样可以放在名词之前或之后，如果放在后面，倾向于表示这是就当前而言的。

• the only available solution (the only solution available)唯一可行的解决办法
• one of the few options available少数几个可供选择的方案之一
• You'll have to examine the available alternatives (the alternatives available).你们要研究一下各种方案。
• The 2004 records were the latest available.2004 年的记录是现有最新的了。

如果同表示“有”或“存在”的动词连用，通常要放在名词后面。

• There are currently five categories available.目前有五类。
• There is almost no food available on the market.市场上几乎没有食品出售。
• The basic principle is that when there is no oxygen available, yeast produces alcohol as a byproduct of sugar metabolism.基本原理就是：当没有氧时，酵母就会产生糖代谢的副产品酒精。

2) 它同 possible 一样可以同最高级形容词放在一起，表示最高级的范围。

• the best available quality / the best quality available现有最好的质量
• the most powerful available gasoline engine现有的马力最大的汽油引擎
• the most recent official figures available当前最新近的官方数字
• Book me on the earliest available flight.给我订最早的一班飞机。

3) 但是，与 possible 不同，available 不能用来限定副词含义的范围。例如我们可以说 as early as possible，但不能说 *as early as available。

4) available 的词义比较灵活，大体上表示“可以满足他人在某一场合的例行需要”。例如打电话找某人，找得到就是 available；要拜访某经理，秘书说他忙或者外出了，就是 not available；市场上某种货物脱销，也是 not available。make something available 是常用的说法，多用被动语态，表示“发表”、“公布”。

• The photos were made available by the official news agency.照片是官方通讯社发表的。

用主动语态也可以有“发挥”、“使之起作用” 的意思。

• They were invaluable in the transformation of the group, making available their organizational skills.他们发挥了自己的组织才能，对改造该团体起了宝贵的作用。

make oneself available 是婉转的说法，相当于“赶到现场”

• make a room available腾出一个房间（作某种用途）。
