■ within... of...

1) 在空间意义上，是“离…有多远”的意思，通常不涉及方向问题。

• He filled his mug to within two-and-a-half inches of the rim.他给自己的大杯子倒满到差两英寸半到边的高度。

2) 在时间意义上，有两个方向截然相反的意义。一是“在某时间点之前多久”，一是“在某时间点之后多久”。

前者例如：

• So eventually every American could be inoculated within six months of a pandemic's beginning.这样，最后每个美国人都可以赶在流行病开始之前半年获得接种。

后者例如：

• The paint dries within minutes of being applied.油漆上过之后，几分钟就干。
• Within a month of her husband's death, she was back in Mexico.她丈夫去世后一个月，她就回到了墨西哥。
• Within hours of the bombing, ten tanks and several armored vehicles rolled into the Palestinian leader's badly battered compound.(The New York Times, Sept. 20, 2002, A6)炮击后过了几个钟头，十辆坦克和好几辆装甲车隆隆开进了那位巴勒斯坦领导人的破碎庭院。
• Most healthy adults who get the vaccine develop protection to most or all of these types within 2 to 3 weeks of getting the shot.注射了这种疫苗的健康成年人，大多数在接种了之后两到三个星期就产生对于所有这些类型感染的防御能力。

有时候 within 后面不一定是明确的时间数量，此时更要注意不要理解错误。

• But something curious happened within a generation of that book's publication. (US News & World Report, Oct. 23, 2006, p.59)但是这本书出版后过了一代人的时间，就发生了奇怪的事（注意：a generation 作为一个时间数量，不是：“在这本书出版的一代人当中”）。

但是，如果事情尚未发生，就不一定指时段结束时不早不晚的特定一个时间点，而可以是指一段时间之内的任何一个时间点。

• Computers are returnable within 14 days of purchase with original receipt.购买电脑后 14 天内，可以凭原来发票退货（不一定非得等到 14 天，买了后第二天也可以）。

由于 within... of... 表示时间往往带有这种“一段时间之内的任何一个时间点”的意义，如果要表示“某时间点之前另一明确时间点”，而且表示两个时间点之间的时段很短促，用 within... of... 就不能充分表示原意，此时可以说 with only... to go before...

• With only two hours to go before the final decision was made, everyone was nervous.离最后作决定只有两小时，人人心里都很紧张。

也可以用 with... until...

• ... recent polls have shown Obama with a lead no smaller than 7 percentage points with less than two weeks until Election Day. (The Associated Press, Oct. 23, 2008)最近的民意调查表明，奥巴马在离选举日不到两周的时候领先至少七个百分点。

3) 也可以后面没有 of...，这个前面的时间点是不言自明的，此时，谓语动词可以表示瞬时动作，也可以表示延续状态（指这段时间当中发生变化的结果状态）。

• Within minutes I was called to his office.几分钟后，我就被喊到他的办公室。
• Within half an hour they were eating sandwiches in the cafeteria.半小时后，他们在餐厅吃着三明治。
