这两个短语动词都作“专心致志于”讲，只是 apply oneself to 既可用名词又可用动名词短语作宾语（参见词条 P.66 ），而 apply one's mind to 则只能用名词作宾语，并含有“足以解决或克服”的意思。
例如：
Johnson applied himself to his new job. 约翰逊一心扑在新的工作上。
Bob applied himself to testing the hardness of this material.
鲍勃一心在试验这种材料的硬度。
James applied his mind to the difficulty. 詹姆斯一心想要把困难克服掉。
Mary applied her mind to this troublesome problem. 玛丽一心想要把这个难题解决好。
