1a. 作修饰语使用，前者这个形容词和后者这个数词都要求用得适当；前者强调处于同一情况中的事物。试举例来说明。
例如：
The two teams have quarrelled again. 这两个球队又争吵起来了。（不说 both the teams have quarrelled again. ）
Kazia and Manya have come to an understanding. 卡齐娅和玛妮娅已取得谅解。（不说 Both Kazia and Manya …）
1b. 前者含有“各自”的义蕴，而后者含有“合在一起”的义蕴。
比较：
Both the foreign guests have planted a tree. 两位外宾都种了一棵树。（各种一棵）
The two foreign guests have planted a tree. 两位外宾都种了一棵树。（合种一棵）
1c. 其次，前者不如后者语气强。
例如：
Both the boys and girls have gone to the countryside. 男孩以及女孩都已下乡去了。
