coming ： forthcoming — 227
1a. 作定语使用，这两个形容词是同义，都作“行将”或“来临”讲，但不一定能通用：前者多半修饰自然现象，而后者则只能修饰人为的事情。
例如：
the coming winter 来冬（修饰自然现象）
the forthcoming celebration 即将来临的庆祝（修饰人为的事情）
1b. 后者又可作表语使用，作“乐意的”或“热情的”讲，而且多半用于否定结构；而前者则不能这样使用。
例如：
When he was asked why he was late, no answer wasforthcoming. 当有人问他为什么迟到，回答总是不得要领。
I asked several persons the way to the post office, but none ofthem were very forthcoming. 我问了好些人去邮局怎么走，可没有一人是热情回答的。
The chance we hoped was not forthcoming. 我们盼望的机会不是唾手可得的。
