词组 ago
释义 ago
You usually use ago to say how long it is since something happened. For example, if something happened five years ago, it is now five years since it happened.
We met two years ago.
We got married about a year ago.

When you are talking about an event in the past, you use the simple past tense with ago. For example, you say 'He died four years ago'. You do not say 'He has died four years ago'.
All that stuff disappeared thirty years ago.
I did it just a moment ago.

You only use ago when you are talking about a period of time measured back from the present. If you are talking about a period measured back from some earlier time, you use before or previously.
The centre had been opened some years before.
Three years previously I had been admitted to the Royal Canadian Hospital, Taplow.

WARNING

You do not use ago and 'since' together. You do not say, for example, 'It is three years ago since it happened'. You say 'It happened three years ago' or 'It is three years since it happened'.
He died two years ago.
It is two weeks now since I wrote to you.

You also do not say that something has been happening 'since three years ago'. You say that it has been happening for three years.
I have lived here for nearly twenty years.
I have known you for a long time.
I haven't smoked for fifteen years.

See entries at ↑ for and ↑ since.
