You use way to refer to the thing or series of things that someone does in order to achieve a particular result. You can talk about a way of doing something or a way to do it. There is no difference in meaning.
...the most effective way of helping the unemployed.
...the best way to help a fourteen-year-old with reading problems.
There are other ways of achieving the same ends.
There may be far better ways to achieve the desired ends.

Note that if you use a possessive with way, you must use 'of' and an '-ing' form after it. You do not use a 'to'-infinitive.

They are part of the author's way of telling his story.


'means'


You do not usually use a noun after way of when you are saying how something is done or achieved. For example, you do not refer to an animal or vehicle as a 'way of transport'. The word you use is means.
The essential means of transport for the islanders was the donkey.

used in adverbials of manner


You can say that something is done in a particular way.
It was done in a very civilized way.
...how to behave in an aristocratic way.
We have to describe this in some other way.

When you use 'this' or 'that' with way, you usually omit the 'in'.
I can do it this way.
It might be done that way.

You can also omit 'in' when you are using 'the' or a possessive.
We don't look at things the same way.
I'm going to handle this my way.


used with relative clauses


When the way is followed by a defining relative clause, this clause can be either a 'that'-clause or a clause beginning with 'in which'. For example, you can say 'the way she told the story', 'the way that she told the story', or 'the way in which she told the story'. There is no difference in meaning.
It's the way they used to do it.
...the way that they would behave.
...the way in which we treat our juveniles.


'in the way'


If someone or something is in the way or in your way, they are preventing you from moving freely or from seeing clearly.
A large tree was in the way.
Why did you stand in the way?
Get out of my way.


'on the way'


If something happens to you during a journey, you do not say that it happens to you 'in the way' or 'in your way'. You say that it happens on the way or on your way.
On the way she went into the sweet shop.
Lynn was on her way home.
