 ♣ cease doing, cease to do
　两者在意思上没有明显区别，只是：
1. cease后接动名词比接不定式常见。
2. 表示有意识的行为多用cease doing；而表示无意识的行为则多用cease to do.
3. 如指具体的动作多用cease doing；表示经常性的行为时常用cease to do.
 ♣ cease, discontinue, halt, stop
　这组词都可表示“中断”“停止”。其区别在于：
1. 在指某种状态或活动的结束时， stop和cease可以互换。
2. stop是这几个词当中概念最广泛，使用最多、最普通的词。cease的概念较窄，语气较严肃，是正式用语。discontinue也是正式用语。
3. stop既可指运动或行为的迅速中断，又可指某种状态或活动的结束；cease主要指某种状态或活动的结束或不复存在；discontinue则指长期存在着的习惯或习惯性的活动中止了；halt指骤然有力地终止。

　cease　偶尔还可用作名词，常以without cease短语出现，意为“不停地，不断地”。例如：
