　Except for smoking and drinking, he is a thrifty man.　除了抽烟、喝酒，他是个生活节俭的人。

2. 若不是 but for
　The translation is well done except for a few small mistakes.　除却几处小错，翻译练习做得就是很好的了。
　She is pretty except for the fact that her eyes are too big.　若不是她的眼睛太大，她是很漂亮的。

 ♣ except, except for
　except　和except for都有“除…”的意思。
1. except表示只是单纯地将其后所接的人或事物排除在外；except for表示“除了…”“只是…”，引述一个相反的原因或细节，部分地修正了句中的意思。
2. 前后有相称的同类语时，只能用except，不用except for.
 ♣ except, but
　这两个词都表示“除…外”。but和except都表示从整体中除去部分，但在but的句子里，着重在整体；在用except的句子里，着重在除去的部分。

　反对，对…存有异议　be against (sth)
　They all excepted to the statement.　他们都对这项声明存有异议。
