2. set about接名词、代词或动名词；set out可接带to的动词不定式。
　例如：

　这两个短语在意思上有所区别：set后接名词或代词加现在分词是“使某人或某物处于某种状态”的意思。如果加动词不定式则是“叫某人着手做某事”的意思。

　［析］ set out to-v表示“开始做…”，表示“动身到某地去”可用set out for somewhere.
3. 汤姆着手写论文了。
　［误］ Tom set about to write his paper.
　［正］ Tom set about writing his paper.
　［析］ set about作“着手或开始做某事”解，后面如跟非谓语动词作宾语，则需用动名词形式，不跟动词不定式。另外， set about后面还可以跟名词或名词短语作宾语。
4. 他应该为他的孩子们树立一个更好的榜样。
　［误］ He ought to set a better example for his children.
　［正］ He ought to set a better example to his children.
　［析］ set a good better example to sb是习惯用法，作“（给某人）树立榜样”解，其中介词 to不能用for替代。也可用 set sb a good example的结构表达相同的意思。
5. 一旦玛丽下决心做一件事，她就不会轻易放弃。
　［误］ Once Mary sets her mind in sth she wouldn't easily give up.
　［正］ Once Mary sets her mind on sth she wouldn't easily give up.
　［析］ set one's mind on是固定短语用法，表示“一心想做（某事）或得到（某物）”，介词 on不能用 in替代。还可用 set one's heart on来表示同样的含义。
6. 他们向朋友告别后就动身回家了。
　［误］ Having said farewell to their friends, they set off to home.
　［正］ Having said farewell to their friends, they set off for home.
　［析］ 表达“动身去…”或“出发去…”往往用set off for (a place)的结构，介词 for不能用to替代。
7. 他们放火烧了房子。
　［误］ They set the fire to the house.
　［正］ They set fire to the house.
　［析］ set fire to作“放火”或“纵火”解， fire前面不加冠词。
8. 有人割破栅栏放走了犯人。
　［误］ Someone set free the prisoners by cutting through the bars.
　［正］ Someone set the prisoners free by cutting through the bars.
　［析］ set sb free为习惯用法，表示“释放（某人）”，这里宾语sb必须放在set和 free之间，不能置后。
9. 太阳从东方升起，西方落下。

　［析］ 表示日月星辰降落需搭配介词 in. set这里本身就是go down的意思，所以无需再加down.
