词组 | disposal, disposition |
释义 | disposal, disposition The comments about disposal and disposition made by Fowler 1926 and revived by a few latter-day usage writers are correct for the most part. The two words overlap in some areas of usage, but each tends to specialize in certain jobs. Disposal refers to the getting rid of or destruction of something. It also gets used in the phrases at one's disposal and at the disposal of. Instances in which disposition replaces disposal in these uses are quite uncommon: • ... the disposal of 300 tons of solid waste —Annual Report, Eastman Kodak Co., 1970 • ... can use any means at their disposal —James F. Reed III, Center Mag., May 1969 • ... to place the facilities of both institutions at the disposal of graduate students —Current Biography, December 1964 Disposition is the usual choice when talking about things that are administered, arranged, settled, or taken care of; disposal is only infrequently used in such cases. And disposal does not, of course, refer to temperament or inclination, as disposition does. • ... had informed Octavian of the general plan ... and he made his dispositions accordingly —John Buchan, Augustus, 1937 • ... disposition of the 800,000 wretched Arab refugees —Adlai E. Stevenson, Look, 22 Sept. 1953 • ... the board's disposition of his case —AA UP Bulletin, December 1967 • ... the future disposition of the Panama Canal — Stanley Karnow, Saturday Rev., 24 July 1976 • ... showed no disposition to be bored —Vita Sack-ville-West, The Edwardians, 1930 |
