词组 image
释义 image
Image in its relatively recent sense of "popular or perceived conception, public impression" is called a fad word by Flesch 1964, Bernstein 1965, Fowler 1965, and Watt 1967, although Flesch thinks it seems to fill a need. The usage panel of Harper 1975, 1985 disapproves it. Phythian 1979 and Ebbitt & Ebbitt 1982 say it is established, and by implication so does Janis 1984, who merely explains it. Bernstein thought the fad would probably fade out, but that has not happened. It is well established, as these examples attest:
... how his media consultants formed, marketed and sold an image —Ronald Steel, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 5 Aug. 1984
He's devoted a large part of his creative life to demolishing the image of the ballerina as nun — Arlene Croce, Harper's, April 1971
For others, clothes become a way to express themselves—although whether they are expressing their true personality or trying to create an image is often far from clear —John de St. Jorre, Town & Country, November 1982
... has been quite frank in discussing the image he hopes Germany will present to the world at Munich —William L. Shirer, Saturday Rev., 25 Mar. 1972
It can be used attributively, too:
We were concerned about the perception that some corporations were paying no tax, and that just wasn't right, says John E. Chapoton, Assistant Treasury Secretary for tax policy. "We're dealing with an image problem." —Gene Koretz, Business Week, 1 Mar. 1982
... the decisive battle for the Reagan Revolution got reduced to an image contest between the Speaker and the President —David A. Stockman, Newsweek, 28 Apr. 1986
