词组 | imminent |
释义 | imminent 1. Imminent in the past has been spelled eminent (see eminent, imminent), but the spelling is now avoided as an error. It was denounced as long ago as Baker 1770. He blamed it on the French. The opposite mistake may possibly have been made in the following example, but it seems more likely that a pun involving imminent arrival and eminent was intended: • Miami Beach's tensely anxious Sans Souci Hotel readied the full treatment for its imminent guests, the touring Shah of Iran and his luscious Queen — Time, 24 Jan. 1955 2. Imminent, immanent. Sellers 1975 and others warn against confusing these words, which would appear hard to do from the disparity in their meanings; immanent is more likely to be found in philosophy than in ordinary discourse. But the spellings are close, and sure enough imminent has been used in the sense of "immanent" since 1605. The OED has three 17th-century examples, and one from the 19th. Here are a couple of ours from the 20th: • ... suddenly the young woman she is to be is imminent in her manners and her looks —Irwin Edman, American Scholar, Winter 1950-1951 • It is possible to act to change the world because we are not totally imminent in it —Richard Lichtman, Center Mag., September 1969 Now it is entirely possible that these are simply typographical errors and not deliberate revivals of the 17th-century spelling. We firmly recommend that you keep the two words distinct in spelling so that you do not confuse your readers. |
