词组 | divest |
释义 | divest When followed by a prepositional phrase, divest appears with of: • It will divest itself of its local phone companies — Laura Landro, Wall Street Jour., 18 Mar. 1982 • ... divesting themselves of all claim to moral and intellectual leadership —George F. Kennan, New Republic, 24 Aug. 1953 • ... as if his woolen small-clothes had been disarranged in the divesting of his street-coat —Flann O'Brien, At Swim-Two-Birds, 1939 It is interesting to note that until recently, divest in its business sense was usually a reflexive verb, as shown in the first example above. Although that usage is still predominant, another has recently cropped up alongside it in which divest takes as a direct object the thing that is given up: • GAF Corp. is in the process of divesting eight businesses—about half of its revenue base —Business Week, 1 June 1981 Barzun 1985 considers that, with this use, "an important verb has lost its bearings." This use might be seen as a contemporary revival of a sense "to lay aside, abandon" labeled "now rare" in the OED and "archaic" in Webster's Third, though earlier instances of this sense show no orientation to business. But whether the recent use is a new sense or a revival, we must wait to see how well it establishes itself. |
