| 释义 | dual A thousand years ago and more, Old English had a grammatical number system consisting of singular (for one), dual (for two), and plural (for more than two). The plural long ago supplanted the dual, and all we have as reminders of its former existence are such words as either, neither, between, both, other, and whether, whose ancestors were connected with it. These words and the comparative inflection -er can still serve to remind us of things in twos, but the notion is greatly weakened now and in some instances nearly forgotten. It is, however, salutary to remember how long the formal dual number has been defunct when a commentator invokes it to justify a supposed limitation on usage. |
