词组 show
释义 show
 1. Show has been used to mean "show up; appear" for many years:
'Gojar never shows by day,' explained Talbot —B. M. Croker, Company's Servant, 1907 (OED Supplement)
Well, Ralston showed about midnight —Ring Lardner, The Big Town, 1921
This sense of show began to appear commonly in print in the 1950s, and it has continued in regular use since then. It would not be at home in highly formal prose, but its use is not otherwise restricted:
... Mary seemed to be feeling better and I hoped the lion would show in the late afternoon —Ernest Hemingway, "Miss Mary's Lion," 1956
... those few Congressmen and Congressional aides who did show —Victor S. Navasky, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 20 July 1975
Michaels had failed to show —Michael Katz, N. Y. Times, 13 Feb. 1983
... members of the U.S. squad had spoken of the fete without enthusiasm, and, indeed, none of them showed —Robert Sullivan, Sports Illustrated, 5 Mar. 1984
The only commentator to have criticized this use of show is Theodore Bernstein 1965, who describes it as "a sad casualism."
 2. Showed, shown. The usual past participle of show is shown:
... the Vatican has shown itself ready —Irving R. Levine, Atlantic, September 1970
Showed can also be used as a past participle:
... had showed their willingness to compromise — Book Previews, November 1950
... there had never been a moment when he had showed any meanness of spirit —Mario Puzo, The Sicilian, 1984
Such usage is entirely correct; the past participle shewed dates from the 14th century, showed from the 15th. Showed occurs too frequently to be considered rare but is less common than shown. Usage commentators generally acknowledge that showed as a past participle is standard, but they recommend using shown instead.
 3. Shew, shewed, shewn. The e variant of show has been less and less used since the 19th century. It is kept familiar through its use by George Bernard Shaw, Henry James, Ford Madox Ford, and other literary figures, as well as by its frequent appearance in older authors. Longman 1988 says it can still be found in British legal use, and we have an example from a 1969 publication on heraldry.
