词组 editorial
释义 editorial
The propriety of editorial was a subject of minor controversy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This noun was criticized in 1870 by Richard Grant White, who described it as an "unpleasant Americanism" to be shunned in favor of the British leader or leading article. White felt that editorial could only be correctly used as an adjective. Not enough people agreed with him, however, to give editorial any lasting notoriety, at least in the U.S., and no American commentator since Krapp 1927 (who defended the noun use) has addressed the subject. The British, on the other hand, still seem to have mixed feelings about it:
Editorial... is now a strong rival of'leading article' and 'leader,' and it is probable that it will oust them in due course, being much more self-explanatory — Foster 1968
Editorial: ... Not the leading article. To use it that way is really unprofessional —Sellers 1975
