词组 | et al. |
释义 | et al. This Latin abbreviation means "and others" or "and the others." Some commentators have contended that it should only be used of people, regarding it strictly as an abbreviation of the masculine et alii and the feminine et aliae, but in fact it also serves as an abbreviation of the neuter et alia, and its use of things is not incorrect. It is, however, uncommon. The most frequent use of et al. is in citing (as in a footnote or bibliography) a publication that has several or many authors. To save space, one or two of the authors' names are given, followed by et ai: Ruth I. Anderson et al., The Administrative Secretary: Resource (New York: McGraw-Hill, 1970), p. 357. Commentators generally discourage the use of et al. and similar abbreviations in expository writing, but our evidence shows that such use is common. There is considerable variation in the way et al. is styled. It sometimes is printed in italics, and the period following al is sometimes omitted; but the favored choice is to retain the period and to print et al. in regular roman type: • ... to put maximum pressure on Nixon et al. abruptly to pull out of Asia —William F. Buckley, Jr., National Rev., 30 June 1970 • ... memories of the big numbers from The Green Pastures, et al. —Alan Rich, New York, 10 Jan. 1972 • The solicitude of Simon, Newman, et al. for correct usage —Robert Pattison, On Literacy, 1982 • Apparently John Updike, Saul Bellow et al. were going to welcome me —Susan Brownmiller, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 12 Jan. 1986 |
