词组 | every which way |
释义 | every which way This expressive Americanism, attested as early as 1824, has made a few commentators nervous: Vizetelly 1906 calls it "a pleonastic colloquialism"; MacCracken & Sandison 1917, Shaw 1962, 1970, and Prentice Hall 1978 all call it colloquial. Baker 1927 labels it incorrect and appends the following instruction: • Instead of saying, "He ran every which way," one should say, "He ran in all directions." It is a mystery why American commentators tend to be so timorous about Americanisms. Evidence in the OED Supplement shows that the expression has even caught on to some extent in Great Britain now. Here are a few unvarnished samples, all American: • ... dozens of cameras perched all over the city ... always relentlessly prying and probing every which way —Philip Hamburger, New Yorker, 19 July 1952 • ... he attempted to perfect a relaxing chair—an overstuffed piece of furniture that started to pulsate gently every which way as soon as it was occupied — New Yorker, 29 May 1954 • ... in 1912 when the Democratic Party was split every which way —Harry S. Truman, in Merle Miller, Plain Speaking, 1973 • ... to send the company on a wild-goose chase shipping its damn machines every which way —E. L. Doctorow, Loon Lake, 1979 |
