词组 peruser
释义 peruser
The strictures discussed just above at peruse are also occasionally applied to its derivative peruser.
"... writers whose names ... flashed like a red signal to the casual peruser of cartoons and ads —N.Y. Times, 17 Feb. 1985
That passage was censured in Winners & Sinners, 19 Apr. 1985:
Casual peruser is an oxymoron: peruse means inspect minutely, not browse.
The Winners & Sinners writer is wrong on two counts. First he has confused two senses of peruse: it is the "read" sense that should apply here, not the "examine" sense. And second, the notion that the "read" sense can only be narrowly applied is erroneous (see peruse). The usage of the Times reporter is not very different from that of a regular user of the words peruse and peruser some two centuries ago:
... those quotations which to careless or unskilful perusers appear only to repeat the same sense, will often exhibit, to a more accurate examiner, diversities of signification —Samuel Johnson, Preface to the Dictionary, 1755
Peruser is simply a harder or fancier word for reader.
