词组 | experience |
释义 | experience 1. Perhaps influenced by Alford 1866, who condemns the use of the word experience as a verb, American language commentators, among them Richard Grant White 1870, Ayres 1881, and Bierce 1909, continued into the beginning of the 20th century to caution against its use. The criticism persisted despite the fact that the verb experience had been in use as far back as the 16th century (as the OED shows) and had remained in continuous use since that time. Experience never did fade from use, and the language critics eventually accepted its legitimacy, so that contemporary usage books seldom even touch on the earlier controversy. 2. When the verb experience is used with a preposition, the form of the verb is usually the past participle, and the preposition most frequently is in: • Also experienced in expressing his ideas in writing —Current Biography 1953 • ... highly experienced in industrial management and financial policy —Times Literary Supp., 9 Mar. 1967 Less frequently, experience is used with as: • ... with the help of a staff of twenty-three people experienced as parents —Current Biography, May 1965 |
