词组 | expertise |
释义 | expertise This French borrowing was first used in English more than a century ago, but its establishment as a full-fledged English word has occurred only in recent decades. Its older sense, "expert opinion or commentary," is now relatively rare: • But there is no evidence in the fairly numerous records of such expertises as have survived of any attempts at similarly precise analyses —Rowland Mainstone, Developments in Structural Form, 1975 But its newer sense, "expert knowledge or skill," is extremely common: • ... with what sort of expertise does he judge a poet to be great? —Iris Murdoch, The Fire and the Sun, 1977 • ... showed his expertise at civil service —Joseph Wambaugh, The Black Marble, 1978 • ... the very model of musical comedy expertise — Martin Gottfried, Saturday Rev., 15 Apr. 1978 • ... despite the bluegrass expertise McCoy has gained —Larry Rhodes, Bluegrass Unlimited, January 1981 • ... the professionalism and increasing expertise of nurses today —Laurie Repchull, Health Care, 14 June 1982 Because it is both highly popular and fairly new, expertise is susceptible to criticism as a vogue word, and a number of commentators have called it one. Harper 1985 suggests that it "may well fall into disuse," but our growing collection of evidence for it suggests the process has not begun yet. It is equally possible that the voices of criticism will themselves eventually die out, as it becomes increasingly obvious that expertise is here to stay. |
