词组 compendium
释义 compendium
Bernstein 1962, 1965 and Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980 assert that a compendium must be an abridgment or something brief—something little, not big. Bryson 1984 says size has nothing to do with it— the point is the concise treatment. All three have unfortunately fixed on one use of a multipurpose word and assumed that their use is the only correct use. Compendium is not a narrowly or precisely applied word. It has been used of items as diverse as books, people, packages of stationery, periodicals, buildings, and collections of several kinds. The doubtful should look at the examples given in the OED, the OED Supplement, or Webster's Third. Or read the fairly recent examples shown below. The plurals compendia and compendiums, by the way, are both acceptable.
