词组 | compleat |
释义 | compleat Labeled an obsolete spelling of complete in the OED, compleat is entered in the OED Supplement with the notation "Revived in imitation of its 17th-cent. use...." The spelling seems to have made its comeback by means of book titles such as The Compleat Bachelor, The Compleat Pediatrician, The Compleat Strategyst. These titles were, of course, modeled on Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler. Around the middle of the 20th century, compleat began to creep back into running text as well: • A compleat decoration and consulting service — advt., Antiques, October 1952 • As a help in breaking down the Prime Minister's compleat personality —John Haverstick, Saturday Rev., 4 Dec. 1954 • The compleat idler is a recurrent American dream —Time, 24 June 1957 • ... one of the most decorated officers in the Army and a compleat professional —Ward Just, Atlantic, October 1970 • Again Mr. Thomas showed himself to be the compleat maestro —Winthrop Sargeant, New Yorker, 20 Nov. 1971 • ... one gazed on the compleat politician, accepted him as such, and did not much consider the man — Henry Fairlie, Harper's, January 1973 • ... playing Dracula as the compleat ladykiller — Janet Maslin, N.Y. Times, 13 July 1979 • ... clarion calls for the compleat physician —JAMA, 29 Aug. 1980 |
