| 释义 | false titles This is Copperud's term for what Bernstein calls "coined titles" and Safire calls "bogus titling"—the journalistic practice of placing descriptive terms in front of a person's name in a news story: "globe-trotting diplomat Henry Kissinger" or "consumer advocate Ralph Nader." Copperud and Bernstein associate the practice with Time magazine, which probably popularized the practice if it did not invent it. Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980 and Bernstein 1958, 1965 find the practice distasteful—apparently many newspaper stylebooks object to it. Safire 1980 notes how these descriptors tend to be regularly attached to particular names. Newman 1974 amuses himself to some length by pretending that they are first names. The practice also exists in British journalism; it is noted by Sellers 1975 as "77me-style adjectives" and in a review of a book on the tabloid press in the Times Literary Supplement (22 May 1981 ) as "the attributive queue." The practice seems to show no sign of waning (Copperud gives twice as much space to it in 1980 as he did in 1970) and at any rate presents no problem of understanding to the reader. The practice probably derives its appeal from the compact way in which it identifies people for the reader. If you're not a journalist, you need never worry about it in your writing.
