词组 hail, hale
释义 hail, hale
Confusion about which of these spellings should be used in a particular context one would expect to be common, but we have relatively little evidence of it in our files. Perhaps proofreaders and copy editors have especially sharp eyes when it comes to hail and hale. Even so, it seems worthwhile to point out possible areas of confusion.
The spelling hale is the established choice for the verb meaning "to compel to go":
... he was haled before a summary court —Hugh Trevor-Roper, American Scholar, Winter 1981/82
Usage commentators find that this verb is often mistakenly spelled hail. We've collected only two examples of this error, the most recent of which is from 1949:
... Albania was challenging Great Britain's competence to hail it before the International Court of Justice —Collier's Year Book, 1949
Hale is also the spelling used for the adjective meaning "healthy":
... a tall, hale blond of thirty —Sara Davidson, Harper's, June 1972
In this case we have collected three errors within the last 15 years, so the problem may be greater:
... most young Israelis... are tough, confident, hail-and-hearty —The Economist, 26 July 1985
The spelling hail is correctly used for the noun and verb relating to icy lumps of precipitation and for the verb meaning "greet" or "acclaim." It also occurs in the idiom "hail from":
They hail from any number of Western states — Gary Schmitz, Denver Post, 31 Aug. 1984
      And in the term hail-fellow-well-met:
      ... a fun guy, a genuine hail-fellow-well-met —William Taaffe, Sports Illustrated, 10 Mar. 1986
