词组 | half-mast, half-staff |
释义 | half-mast, half-staff Harper 1975, 1985 says that half-mast is the more common term for the position in which a flag is flown as a symbol of mourning, noting that the entries in dictionaries bear out the contention. Bremner 1980 and the New York Times Style Book (1962) insist that half-mast be reserved for naval flags and half-staff for all others. Copperud 1980 hints rather broadly that such insistence is pedantry. Both forms are correct: half-mast is used for any flag; half-staff is used for any flag other than a naval flag. |
